My work is a series of photographs that show the interaction between humanity and nature.
I got a lot of my inspiration from the photographer Todd Hido. I was interested in his landscapes and his ‘homes at night’ series. All of Todd Hido’s works bring a sense of nostalgia and are shot almost imperfectly which creates points of interest. His works showcase the beauty of landscapes and the beauty of the suburbs.
His work inspired me to focus on the beauty in everyday things. I have been living in St. Mary’s area for the past 4 years and never really took the time to slow down and look around, because of this I decided to shoot my images locally. I wanted my works to embody the intersections of humanity and nature, through structures and landscapes. Humanity cultivates nature to how we want it to be, cherishing it, but also destroying it. These themes are shown in nature parks, gardens, and even in suburbia. My works showcase structures erected to balance with nature, and structures that are now interacting with nature. These pieces are stand alone, each very different from the other, but there is a sense of quietness to all of them. I chose to create black and white imaging because I believe it brings a sense of timelessness to each piece. My themes are not new and that is my intention. Humanity has changed constantly throughout the centuries, structures rising and falling. Nature and landscapes are changed but ultimately everything goes back to nature.
